Chinese QR codes: coming to a shop near you?


If, like me, you still think paying with contactless card feels a little bit futuristic, then you might not have heard about the whole world of technology that is Chinese mobile payments.

In the last few years China’s tech giants Alibaba and Tencent have seen a huge increase in their mobile payments users, with more and more people leaving their wallets at home in favour of using Alipay and WeChat Pay on their phones instead.

Payment using QR codes has also become popular, with everyone from department stores and coffee shops to buskers and roadside vendors using the technology to collect payments from customers.

To find out more about this technology and how we’re set to see more of it in the UK, we chatted to Melanie Haas from Europass, who helps European companies get their heads around these trends in Chinese mobile payments.
