Acclaimed dancer, Akram Khan MBE, surprised dancers at the China Exchange on Friday following a special routine.
It was part of the Big Dance Pledge Performance day, where 42,000 people act out the same routine on the same day from wherever they are in the world.
Using online films and teaching resources, dancers in over 800 groups from over 44 countries took part in the dancing.
Akram's routine used the themes of ‘overcoming adversity’ and ‘achievement’ - encouraging groups to tell their own stories through the choreography and come together to share their experiences in performance.
The dancers showcased a unique Chinese interpretation of the routine to an audience including their friends and family. The dance culminated from four weekly workshops dedicated to gaining a better understanding of Chinese dance. Most of the dancers had never took part in a performance to an audience before.
Akram Khan is one of the most celebrated and respected dance artists today. His work spans from collaborations with include the National Ballet of China, actress Juliette Binoche and pop star singer Kylie Minogue. As well as renowned visual artists Anish Kapoor, Antony Gormley and Tim Yip.
After the show Akram congratulated each of the dancers before posing for photos with them.
