The Sino team is delighted to announce that our own Day Show presenter Kavita is a finalist for the Asian Media Awards, Radio Presenter of the Year award.
Announced earlier this evening at the ITV London Studios Kavita is a finalist in the Radio Presenter of the Year category.
Kavita said that she is "super excited and honoured to have been nominated by my colleagues for this award. I feel humbled that the team I work with did this for me". We thought Kavita was so deserving of an award we didn't even tell her we'd nominated her.
Station Manager Gerry Edwards said: "the first thing Kavita knew about this was when she got the email with her nomination. We think she deserves getting through to the final round, and she deserves to win".
But before you read why we think she's great why don't you have a listen to some of her best bits:
Kavita has 6 years experience of presenting and producing creative content within British-Asian broadcasting. She started at Asian Star 101.6fm where she was most famously known for revamping The Big Drive Home. This led to her being nominated for an Asian Media Award in 2013 for Best Show. She continued nurturing her presenting flair at Dilse Radio and Lyca Radio. Whilst at the helm of the Lyca Radio Breakfast Show, she tripled the listeners from 42,000 to 119,000. After travelling the world (she went for the food not to ‘find herself’) she joined us at Spectrum Sino to try her hand at something a little different.
She has a fair like no-one else and can present both serious and fun topics. For instance, interviewing a hit and run victim to appeal for witnesses, to a local singing coach who is starting a new choir, to a dominatrix on her memoirs of working in an LA dungeon.
Her first show on Sino radio was March 22nd - a date that might ring a bell. That’s right, a terrorist attack occurred during her first show. She handled the emerging situation with pure professionalism and grace, keeping listeners informed of the unfolding events as they took place live and doing regular crosses live from the scene with our News Editor EJ Ward. Kavita didn’t just keep our listeners updated, she was also able to help inform and dispatch our team of journalists who were heading to the scene. EJ says of Kavita, “She was our calm in a storm”, he went on to say “there was a lot of confusion on the ground and the mobile phone network was dropping out, so Kavita was able to effortlessly show her ability as a producer by co-ordinating the team on the ground, and the studio side of things”.
She set up a partnership with The Alchemist bar and organised a huge cocktail competition for our listeners. She produced the twitter live videos for the event, she also appeared in them battling to make the best cocktail against fellow presenters. She was our inside girl during the general election earlier this year, keeping listeners updated on the events at the Richmond and Twickenham count, going live on-air, through facebook and twitter live pieces when Vince Cable was announced as the new MP, and then turning up early for work the next day!
She is our festival girl, having reported live from Glastonbury, The Vicars Picnic, Morning Gloryville, Brighton Pride and London Pride. She is an advocate for equal rights and you will often see her championing these. We were super proud of her when she appeared on The Victoria Derbyshire show and on the BBC Asian Network to commend Jodie Whittaker on becoming the first female Doctor Who. “When was the last time us women had a great female role model to look up to?” ...Well... we think our own Kavita is a strong female role model herself and well worthy of winning Radio Presenter Of The Year at the Asian Media Awards 2017.
